Microsoft is testing a redesigned Start menu for Windows 11, aiming to provide users with more control and accessibility. According to a report by The Verge, this is the most significant design update since the OS launched nearly three years ago.

In contrast to the existing interface, which separates pinned apps from recommended items, the updated layout presents all applications directly on the main Start menu screen. This eliminates the need to switch between tabs, streamlining access.

The default view shows apps in two rows, with options to expand visibility and organize them by category. Users can opt for vertical or horizontal grid arrangements based on preference.

The updated design also allows users to turn off the “Recommended” section, which typically promotes frequently used files and applications.

Microsoft is currently conducting internal testing through the Windows Insider program. The redesigned Start menu is available in the latest Windows 11 beta build distributed to Insider participants earlier this month.

This beta version also introduces taskbar icon scaling, a feature enabling users to reduce icon size and increase available taskbar space. A broader rollout is expected in the upcoming weeks or months,.
